Having trouble with the initial planet in No Man's Sky? Here are the steps you need to take to fix your ship and make it to the sky!

No Man's Sky Next has changed how the game starts from what happened at launch - as such, the walkthrough has been updated to reflect these changes:

While No Man’s Sky is an open-ended game, each player must start by exploring their first planet to repair their ship and take to the stars above.

As you appear on your new planet, your systems will boot up one by one: Shields, health, jetpack, multitool, and suit readings. There’s no spaceship in sight, but it’s likely that you’ll already be in a toxic environment thanks to the planet’s atmosphere - whether radiation, heat, or cold, you can’t survive for long like this.

Hazard Protection: Your suit will always strive to fend off hazardous environments as long as it has enough shielding. This shielding will deplete constantly on the surface of a planet that is hazardous, and even faster when trapped in a storm. You can charge this equipment with certain catalytic elements, which can be defined by their yellow hue. Be sure to take in your surroundings for any yellow plants that carry Sodium, and harvest them to fuel your shielding.

Simply running out of environmental shielding won’t kill you instantly. You’ll slowly take hits to your shield every so often, and only once your shield has been taken out, you’ll finally start taking real damage. Restoring hazard protection will boost your main shield back up again, and you can also take shelter in caves to regenerate your shielding.

Test and Repair Multi-Tool Systems

Multi-tool Repair: Scanner - In order to find your crashed ship, you’ll have to repair your multi-tool’s scanner. The scanner allows you to ping nearby deposits of materials so you can figure out where to go next, and it also lets you know where your ship is at. With your environmental shields falling constantly, you’ll want to get started on this as soon as possible.

The scanner needs Ferrite Dust to work again, and lucky for you, it’s everywhere. Any small rock-like substance you find on the planet is full of Ferrite Dust, and you only need to hit it with your mining laser to make sure. Note that like all other things, your mining laser requires fuel to maintain. Any plant-like things on the planet can be mined for Carbon, which you can use to fuel your laser. If for some reason you completely deplete your laser before finding any Carbon, you can always melee strike objects for a slower rate of extraction by pressing R1 on your PS4.

Warning: You’ll likely spot hovering robots while exploring - these are Sentinels, better known as planet protectors. They are fairly passive on planets like these, but they may become alert if they spot you mining resources a lot. If you start getting scanned by them, it’s best to stop what you are doing and wait until they move on before continuing. If not, they’ll become aggressive and start firing shots at you. It’s possible to give them the slip by running away - they are pretty slow to follow and get lost easily. You can also fight back and destroy them to get some rarer resources, but reinforcements will be called quickly, and it this early stage it’s best to avoid unnecessary entanglements.

Once you have harvested 75 Ferrite Dust from the surrounding rocks, it’s time to repair your first item. Go to your inventory and select the Mulit-tool tab. It’s sparse now, but you can get more extensions later. For now, highlight the Scanner icon and hit the Repair button, which will show you a view of the weapon allowing you to select and make the necessary repair to bring your scanner back online.

Investigate the Starship Signal

You can manually pulse your Scanner every 30 seconds or so by clicking in on the left stick, but a new beacon will show the position of your spaceship regardless. As you make your way to the ship, be sure to note the icons that appear from the scanner pulses. Na are sources of Sodium-rich plants you can harvest to replenish your Environmental Shielding. O2 are sources of oxygen-rich plants that can be used to replenish oxygen, which always slowly falls when exploring planets. H denotes a deposit of Hydrogen, usually Di-Hydrogen Crystals that you’ll need later.

Moving towards your ship, remember that you can press and hold X for short boosts from your thrusters to clear hills faster at the cost of expelling oxygen, and you can click in on the right stick to sprint for short periods, but this will deplete oxygen faster.

Once you reach your Spaceship, a Radiant Pillar BC1, you’ll find that it’s in one piece, but can’t take off just yet. Enter the spaceship, and you’ll find that inside you regenerate environmental shielding, and oxygen levels won’t drop - making it a good place to collect yourself and plan ahead before leaving to explore again.

Check out the ship’s autodiagnostics and read the logs to get your next objective: You need to repair both the ship’s Launch Thrusters and Pulse Engine if you want to get off this planet and explore the galaxy. The thusters are needed to get off the ground, while the engine is needed to gain enough speed to reach other planets.

Starship Repair: Critical Maintenance - In total, you’ll need 1 Metal Plating, 1 Hermetic Seal, 1 Di-hydrogen Jelly, and 50 Pure Ferrit to repair your ship. However, you won’t find all these ingredients just lying around - some must be crafted, others found, and still others to be refined.

Starting with your Pulse Engine, you’ll want to make a Metal Plating. The empty slots in your inventory - or starship cargo, are slots where you can craft new products by highlighting the empty boxes and pressing X. The Metal Plating requires 50 Ferrite Dust, which you should already know where to find by now. Stick close to your ship and mine the nearby rocks to get what you need, then craft the plating in your inventory by pressing X to build. Now, just like you repaired your scanner in the Multi-tool tab, swap to the Starship tab in your inventory and repair the Engine by placing in the plating...but we still need a Hermetic Seal. Enter your starship and consult with the diagnostics to see what to do next.

Search the Crash Site for Supplies

The computer will suggest you salvage a nearby Distress Beacon for its Navigation Data to find a Hermetic Seal somewhere nearby. Leave the ship and look around the crash site for clues. You’ll likely spot a few small containers that might have materials in them, a big damaged machinery that needs other resources to open - and a Distress Beacon with a glowing red orb inside.

After reading the info from the beacon, you can choose to transmit or not - that’s up to you. Afterwards, inspecting it again will reveal the Navigational Data module - take it. In order to use this module, you’ll need to build some moveable tech to house it: a Signal Booster. The Signal Booster acts like a sort of hub that allows you to ping points of interest nearby to figure out which direction to explore.

To build a Signal Booster, you’ll need another Metal Sheet, as well as Carbon Nanotubes. This requires 50 Carbon to make, so get to mining the nearby area for Ferrite from the rocks and Carbon from the trees or whatever passes for trees on your planet. Create both items in your inventory, and you will then be prompted to build the booster.

Unlike smaller items, you need to actually build the booster on the planet. Access the Build Menu by pressing up on the D-Pad and then find a place to create it, preferably close to the crash site. You can mess around with the orientation and colors if you want, and then place it onto the ground to activate it. Interact with the operation Signal Booster by holding Square, and then input the data you have. Your only option here is to scan for distress frequencies, so do that and watch as the beacon zooms out to scan the nearby surface, and points you in the direction of a new beacon where the Hermetic Seal is.

Locate the Hermetic Seal

Refresh your shielding in the ship, then make the long trek towards the distress signal. Remember that you can now pick up and pocket your Signal Booster in your inventory to replace wherever you go - but if you leave it behind and forget it, you’ll have a hard time trying to find it again.

While on route to the new location, be sure to use your scanner to pick up any Sodium or Oxygen you find, as its always good to have supplies on hand. It’s also likely you may encounter a hazardous storm - your suit will alert you to this, and suggest you make a run for it or find a cave where the storm can’t rip through your shielding. If things are clear, you can also keep an eye out for discarded containers that sometimes hold elements like carbon or metal in them.

Upon reaching the forgotten structures, head inside to replenish your shielding and use the terminal to find the distress message - and your Hermetic Seal. Be sure to look around for anything else to interact with, as you can sometimes find a few credits stashed away.

Muti-tool Repair: Analysis Visor - Upon leaving the buildings, you may find that you aren’t sure where your ship is. Normally it will be located on your Visor’s compass, but you lack an Anlaysis Visor. Shoot up some trees to get enough carbon to make Carbon Nanotubes, and then swap to your Multi-Tool inventory to craft the Analysis Visor.

With your visor installed, your compass HUD will be enabled, showing your North, South, your starship, and many other nearby points of interest. These include ore deposits (the blue icon with the cross), dangerous plants or animals (the!), Trade Commodities (the III), Health containers, and larger damaged containers (the chest icon).

The Analysis Visor can also be manually activated by holding L2, allowing you to scan the world around you, as well as pinpoint the markers on your compass. You can also hold your vision over flora, fauna and other things to scan them to your discoveries tab, allowing you to upload them for money, and rename them whatever you wish.

Once you arrive back at the ship, enter to fully repair the Pulse Engine, leaving just one item left to repair.

Repair the Launch Thrusters

To repair the thrusters you need some Ferrite and Di-hydrogen. You may have even already found Di-hydrogen jelly just by exploring and finding abandoned cargo containers. If not, look for the small blue crystals that grow in clumps, and harvest 40 to craft into one piece of jelly to repair part of the thrusters.

The other part requires Pure Ferrite, a material you won’t find just by mining - but by refining. Similar to how you had to build a Signal Booster, you must now build a Portable Refiner by hitting up on the D-Pad and moving over one to select the refiner. It requires 1 Metal Plating and 30 Oxygen, so mine up some extra Ferrite Dust, and look around for the red flowers to get some oxygen.

Like the Signal Booster, place it near the ship and interact with it to get started. The Portable Refiner has a Fuel Inverter (it takes Carbon to work), and an input material, which is then refined over a short period to give you the output material. Place some carbon in the fuel, and your Ferrite Dust in the input slot, and then hit the Begin button to start the refining process. You can leave it do its work once it begins, which you might want to do if you don’t have enough dust to make 50 Pure Ferrite. Once its done, you can stop the process if you have enough or let it refine everything, then put the Ferrite back in your inventory, and pick up the Refiner to regain your fuel, too.

Now you can enter your ship once again to finish the repairs to the Launch Thruster - and finally have a working starship!

You're finally ready to fly. Take off with R2 and then point your nose skyward. Accelerate with R2 and use circle to boost. Zoom upward until you see the stars. Congratulations! you've reached space.

Note that each time you take off, your thrusters will expend their own fuel, which will take Starship Launch Fuel to replenish.
