Looking for how to get to the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3? This guide provides everything you need to know about how to access all four entrances to this important quest location and how to get out of the Underdark to continue your BG3 adventure.

Every Underdark Entrance Location

There are four entrances to access the Underdark.

  • Defiled Temple Underdark Entrance
  • Zhentarim Hideout Underdark Entrance
  • Auntie Ethel’s Ancient Abode Underdark Entrance
  • Whispering Depths Underdark Entrance

You’ll likely be on the search for one of these entrances during Act 1 as you complete the Travel to Moonrise Towers main quest or the Find the Nightsong side quest.

Defiled Temple Underdark Entrance

The Defiled Temple is located in the Goblin Camp Shattered Sanctum. You are first directed to explore this area during the Rescue the Druid Halsin quest.

After making it past the goblin guards, enter the Shattered Sanctum.

You can access the Defiled Temple from Priestess Gut’s private room, which is to the left and up the stairs. There are a few ways to get here:

  • Lockpick the rightmost door and then lockpick the door inside this room
  • Stealth jump across the gap and then lockpick the door inside this room
  • Speak with Priestess Gut and she will let you in the first locked door, but you will either need to fight her or let her try to heal you

Once inside the Defiled Temple with no further threats, head into the archway to the left of Priestess Gut’s canopy bed. You’ll see more ruins and another room with four intersecting circles, which is a puzzle.

Find and open the hidden door by either succeeding on a Perception check directly across the room or by solving the moon puzzle on the floor.

Head into the newly revealed entrance and climb down the ladder.

You’ll now find yourself in Selûnite Outpost, but the gate in front of the statue of Selûne is locked. Additionally, there are protective defensive forces that will attack anyone who walks on the steps. This is powered by a moonstone at the top of the statue of Selûne.

To disable the statues guarding the gate, destroy the moonstone. Climb up either ladder on the side of the gate to get on higher ground.

Use a ranged attack, such as an arrow or a cantrip like Fire Bolt to destroy the moonstone. The light will power down and disable the system.

Finally, find the lever on the ground to the right of the gate to open it. You are now in the Underdark.

Zhentarim Hideout Underdark Entrance

The Zhentarim Hideout is located in Waukeen’s Rest, northwest of the waypoint. You are first directed to explore this area during the Find the Missing Shipment side quest.

Enter the courtyard of the burning complex and turn left to head toward the barns. The hideout is in the building where crates block the door. Move the crates out of the way by selecting and dragging each one.

Once you enter, you’ll be confronted by Salazon guarding the hatch. You will have multiple options to get past him, with or without initiating combat. Whatever path you decide, acquire the key.

Enter the hatch to the Zhentarim basem*nt, and open the hidden entrance behind the wardrobe with the key.

Depending on your previous choices with the Find the Missing Shipment quest, you’ll be prompted with a cutscene with Zarys.

After this conversation, move through the hideout to the northwest corner. There will be a wolf sleeping on the ground.

Approach the wall to trigger a passive Investigation check. If one of your party members succeeds at this check, then it will reveal that the wall is an illusion you can pass through.

Walk through the fake wall to find a wooden elevator. Use Thieves’ Tools to unlock the Elevator Winch.

Take the elevator down to the Underdark.

Auntie Ethel’s Ancient Abode Underdark Entrance

Auntie Ethel’s Ancient Abode is located in Riverside Teahouse. You are first directed to explore this area during the Get Help from Auntie Ethel and Save Mayrina quests.

As you complete these quests, you’ll find Auntie Ethel’s teahouse, which has a secret lair through the fireplace. Make your way through the Overgrown Tunnel until you reach a waterfall. Be sure to pick up a Whispering Mask along the way - you will need it!

For more details on how to navigate the tunnel in Auntie Ethel’s teahouse, including how to get past the gnarled door, check out our comprehensive guide!

Jump through the waterfall to the other side.

Carefully move along the path to loop around back up to a gnarled door immediately to the right of the waterfall entrance. The path is filled with traps, so watch your step!

Take one final jump up to reach the door.

In order to enter, you will need to equip a Whispering Mask that you looted. This mask will allow you to see through the illusion of the door.

Walk through to the other side. Activate the mushroom portals to descend. Welcome to the Underdark!

Whispering Depths Underdark Entrance

Whispering Depths is located in the Blighted Village. You are first directed to explore this area during the Rescue the Druid Halsin main quest.

NOTE: This entrance to the Underdark requires the Feather Fall spell.

Deal with the goblins either by persuasion or by combat. Once you are in the clear, find the well in the village. This is the entrance to the Whispering Depths.

The Whispering Depths is also an important location for the Search the Cellar and Ancient Tome side quests. For more details on how to complete these quests, check out our comprehensive guide!

There will be several spiders in this area. Defeat them in combat to clear out the depths.

After the room is safe, you’ll see a giant hole in the middle of all the spiderweb bridges. This is located northeast of the Whispering Depths waypoint.

Cast Feather Fall on yourself and your companions, then jump into the hole.

WARNING: If you do not cast Feather Fall or if your Feather Fall spell runs out before you jump, then your character will take lethal fall damage.

The Feather Fall spell will have you glide down and gently land without taking any damage. You made it to the Underdark!

How to Get Out of the Underdark

You can always use the waypoints to leave the Underdark and fast travel above ground, but you need to go through the Underdark in order to move on to Act Two.

For a complete step-by-step walkthrough on how to leave the Underdark, check out our guide on Reach Moonrise Towers.

Be sure to complete all the quests in the Underdark first! These quests will lead you to Grymforge via boat. Upon completion of your quests in the area, you can enter the Wrought-Iron Gate found east of the docks. Activate the elevator to exit the Underdark and proceed to Act Two.
